Made To Kill is the new novel by Adam Christopher (published by Tor on 3 November, who kindly gave me a review copy through NetGalley). It’s a noir-ish thriller about a private detective, Raymond, working in LA during the golden age of Hollywood. The twist is that Raymond is the last functioning robot in the world and his partner, Ada, is a sentient computer. A second twist is that by night Raymond secretly works as an assassin.
The novel opens in typical pulp fashion, with a beautiful woman arriving in Raymond’s office seeking to hire him. Eva McLuckie is one of the most famous actresses in Hollywood, and she wants Raymond to find and kill another actor. This is the trigger for an old-school detective story as Raymond seeks to unravel a mystery that cuts to the heart of Hollywood. It’s full of Russian gangsters, strange machines and Hollywood glamour.
Made To Kill is the first in a planned trilogy by Christopher, about his robot detective Raymond. It is a slick and fun pulp story with a fresh twist.
